Testing chaos ‘blamed on parents worried about children with colds’
Sep 21, 2020
A ‘mad rush’ of parents trying to get tests for their children has been blamed on the ongoing crisis.
Common colds and coughs often surge when children head back to school for the start of the new term.
But a No 10 source told the Mail the surge was partly down to people ‘not understanding when they should and shouldn’t get a test.’
‘Loads of kids get sniffles in the autumn,’ the source said. ‘The difference now is they’re all being kept off school and trying to get corona tests.’
Public Health experts have also warned about parents and over-testing.
Professor Linda Bauld, from the University Of Edinburgh, told the Mail: ‘It was apparent from the Scottish example that a lot of unnecessary tests were taken up by parents for their children and the same thing has happened in England and Wales.’
While parents have been advised not to claim tests for their kids if they have a runny nose or sore throat, the cold symptoms are often mistaken for signs of Covid.
The Mail also discovered parents ignoring the advice and posting about ordering home tests on Mumsnet .
One mother, whose child did not have a high temperature, wrote: ‘Trust me I don’t really want to test her. It isn’t fun for either of us.
‘She’s been coughing on and off all morning now. Yes, I’m sure it is a cold but I’ve been told to get a test so I am.’
