Hirving Lozano handed injury boost as San Diego FC star sets sights on swift MLS return
Mar 7, 2025

Mexico winger Hirving Lozano has avoided a serious injury according to San Diego FC head coach Mikey Varas after he was forced off early against St. Louis City SC

San Diego FC were dealt a major blow on Sunday when star winger Hirving Lozano was forced off with a hamstring injury after just 31 minutes during their home debut against St. Louis City SC. The game finished 0-0 while many were left wondering how long the upstart franchise would be without its first Designated Player, just two games into his MLS adventure.
Thankfully for all involved, head coach Mikey Varas has revealed that Lozano’s injury isn’t serious or long term. "We will be managing him week to week, it's a minor lower leg injury," he said ahead of Saturday’s game at Real Salt Lake, via ESPN.
"It's not serious. So that's good, but it's impossible to predict exactly how long [he'll be out], so every week we'll be evaluating that."
Unfortunately for Lozano, this update could still throw his participation in Mexico’s upcoming CONCACAF Nations League semi-final against Canada into doubt. The two sides are scheduled to meet at SoFi Stadium on March 20, where they’ll look to reach the final three days later against either the USMNT or Panama.
Lozano, who has 70 caps and 18 goals for Mexico, last took to the field for El Tri in their 2-0 Nations League final loss to the USMNT in Texas a year ago. He was recently named in Javier Aguirre’s preliminary 60-man roster. As for Lozano’s domestic campaign, his next opportunity to return after Salt Lake would be on March 15 when they host the Columbus Crew, before a trip to Austin FC on March 23.
