Third Volgoneft tanker carrying fuel oil issues distress signal in the Black Sea Another Volgoneft tanker in the Kerch Strait issued a distress signal overnight from Monday to Tuesday, reports Baza. The vessel is carrying 4,000 tons of fuel oil. The tanker was near the Port Kavkaz, close to where two similar ships sank on Sunday, December 15. The captain of the Volgoneft 109 reported a breach in the seal of the fourth cargo tank, causing fuel oil to leak into the ballast tank. According to Baza, the ship's hull integrity remains intact, and no oil products are leaking into the water. There are 14 crew members on board, and their lives are not at risk. The captain declined an offer to evacuate the crew, requesting only a change in anchorage. The Volgoneft 109 relocated to the Kuchugury area, southeast of Cape Peklo. On Sunday, December 15, tankers Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239 sank in the Kerch Strait during a storm. The resulting fuel oil spill could lead to the Black Sea's largest environmental disaster, according to Greenpeace experts. Preliminary estimates suggest that more than 4,200 cubic meters of oil products may have entered the sea.
