NABBED!!! Suspected Fraudsters Caught With 3,000 Sim Cards Arrested By DCI
Aug. 01, 2020
On July 31, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested three suspects who have been defrauding M-Pesa operators across the country. Jacktone Odhiambo Opondo, Millicent Wanjiru Maina and John Karuku Kabue, who were arrested in separate locations, were identified as the fraudsters.
Opondo was nabbed at Belbur Nobility flats in Egerton, Njoro, Nakuru County. About 3,000 sim cards, some of them registered, and others unregistered, were confiscated from his house. Moving to Juja, Kiambu County, the officers arrested Maina and Kabue. The detectives revealed that the two were accomplices of Opondo. “It has been established that the gang has been getting ID numbers from a loans App known as Scoppe, and thereafter using the same to illegally register the acquired sim card,” the DCI’s released statement reads in part.

It is believed that the trio approaches M-Pesa agents pretending to sell sim cards at discounted prices and, in the process, switches the agents’ M-Pesa phones before flushing the float. The DCI, on its part, in its official Twitter and Facebook accounts, is constantly warning members of the public to be wary of such fraudsters.
