Kibra decides: Kenyans express pride in Mariga following his conceding call
Nov. 08, 2019
- McDonald Mariga conceded to deaf while vote tallying was still ongoing
- To many Kenyans, this was considered a show of maturity which is not a norm in Kenyan elections
- During the campaign period, Mariga had been thought of as a novice in politics being used
- They are, however, proud of him now following his move
In an unprecedented move, Jubilee Party candidate in the Kibra by-election McDonald Mariga conceded to defeat before the final tally of votes leaving Kenyans with a different view of him.
During the campaign period, the former footballer had received a lot of criticism from majority of Kenyans who thought he was a novice and Deputy President William Ruto's project in the poll.
However, a conceding call to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party candidate Imran Okoth on the night of Thursday, November 8, has made Kenyan's proud of Mariga.
The Kibra by-election was marred with voter bribery claims and violence and to many, an impending declaration by the IEBC on who was the winner meant more violence and court cases.
But Mariga, in good timing, is considered to have saved the Kibra constituents post-election headaches and another long wait as court cases would be proceeding, by conceding defeat.
"Mature politics. I salute...the people first always," wrote Jonathan Mueke.
Thats Class...not all kenyans can walk on that lane," wrote Fauzia Mohamed.
"Now he can give back to the community as he would have wished," added Owiyo Erick.
Others who thought the former footballer had pulled an exemplary move contrary to what has become a norm in Kenyan election scenes - disputing election results- included Imran himself.
"That is the spirit of politics. I promise to move forward with every interested party for the good of our people. God bless Kibra," said Imran
As Kibra prepares to welcome its new Member of Parliament, let us have a look at what others had to say of Mariga's call.
