JUST IN | Uhuru to Preside Over Military Passing Out Parade, Then Visit Uganda
Sept. 11, 2019
President Uhuru Kenyatta will today preside over a passing out parade at the Recruits Training School in Eldoret. Kenyatta, who has been in Coast touring various development projects, will fly from Mombasa to Eldoret and back to Nairobi. He has been operating with lean teams in Coast, visiting Kwale, Lamu, Kilifi and Mombasa counties.
Tomorrow, the President is expected to fly to Moroto, Uganda, to join his host Yoweri Museveni. They will sign a bilateral agreement, compelling Kenya to disarm Turkana pastoralists. This is part of a United Nations supported trans-boundary initiative for promoting peace and socio-economic transformation of the Karamoja cluster, which transcends Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia borders.
Officials said, under the agreement, the pastoral communities will be allowed to share social service facilities, environmental resources and economic infrastructures.
It will facilitate peaceful cross-border movements of livestock in search of pasture and water during drought.
Uganda’s Minister for Karamoja Affairs John Byabagambi said the agreement, to be signed tomorrow in Moroto by the two leaders, will also seek to eliminate illegal flow of small arms in the pastoral regions of the East African countries.
Various sources estimate the number of illegal guns in the hands of pastoralists in South Sudan, Turkana and Karamoja region to be in thousands even after the disarmament of Karamoja which collected 40,000 guns between 2007 and 2010.
