Chelsea eased their way to a comfortable defeat of Newcastle on Saturday to move top of the Premier League.
A Federico Fernandez opened the scoring in the first half before Tammy Abraham secured all three points for the Blues with their second after a remarkable run from Timo Werner to set him up.
Werner himself, along with Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech and late substitute Olivier Giroud, really all should have scored against Steve Bruce’s limp Magpies, who never got going at St James’ Park.
The Blues never got out of second gear, but they didn’t need to as they strolled to a 2-0 win with Newcastle limp and listless under Bruce once again.
The Tynesiders’ poor performance was summed up by BT Sport co-commentator Steve McManaman, who went on a rant in the final moments of the game after a Newcastle throw-in.
“This bit here,” began the former Liverpool ace. “This drives me mad.
“They’ve got a throw in by Chelsea’s penalty area and it’s ended up with their goalkeeper! How has that happened?!
“How has that happened? You’re 2-0 down in the last seven minutes of a game! You’ve got a throw-in in the danger area and you’ve gone 90 yard backwards!”
More follows.
