Mary Morgan said a lot of her family is still on the islands but said thankfully, none of her family was hurt during the storm. However, she said she knows so many others who weren't as fortunate and that's why she wanted to help .
Morgan, along with her daughter and husband, packed up 50 bins Sunday that contain basic necessities like soap, towels, toothbrushes and lotion.
She first started collecting donations from friends and family, but when she saw how many people wanted to help, she said she decided to open it up to the public with a GoFundMe page .
Morgan said for some people who receive these packages, it may be the only thing they own.
"I just felt like I really wanted to be a part of assisting these families because there's nothing like never having to depend on anybody for anything and then all of a sudden, you lose everything in a blink of an eye," said Morgan.
Morgan will be bringing supplies to the Bahamian Consulate in Atlanta in a week, where they will be shipped to the island.
At least 43 people have died in the Bahamas, but the death toll is expected to rise as thousands are still missing after Hurricane Dorian hit the islands a week ago as the strongest storm to make landfall there.
