Apr 21, 2025
A devastating accident occurred in Akure, Ondo State, during an official visit by Nigeria' s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, resulting in the tragic death of a young girl named Saratu Lawal. According to reports, a vehicle in the presidential wife' s convoy was responsible for the fatal incident, which happened on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
Senator Tinubu had traveled to Akure to kick off the South- West phase of the Renewed Hope Initiative, a national program aimed at enhancing the lives of women and girls. As part of the initiative, she was scheduled to distribute over 10, 000 professional healthcare kits, including medical scrubs and Crocs footwear, to nurses and midwives working in the South- West zone of the country.
However, the visit was overshadowed by a heartbreaking event. Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that a Hilux truck— described as being butter- colored and part of the First Lady' s convoy— struck seven- year- old Saratu Lawal in the Oba Ile area of Akure. The convoy was en route from the airport to the event venue when the unfortunate incident took place near the Oba Ile Central Mosque.
Saratu, a student at Islamiyar Arabic School in the Shasha area, was hit while the convoy passed through her neighborhood. Witnesses say the impact left her critically injured. Although emergency efforts were made to save her life, she was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to a nearby primary healthcare center in Oba Ile. Her injuries were reportedly too severe for her to survive.
