Measles Outbreak On Rampage, Another Child Killed, 500 People Infected As Cases Surge In Texas
Apr 6, 2025
A devastating measles outbreak in Texas has claimed the life of a second child, marking a tragic milestone in an escalating public health crisis. The exact cause of the child' s death remains under investigation, but it underscores the serious threat posed by this highly contagious disease. Since the outbreak began in January, nearly 500 people in Texas have been infected, with cases spreading to at least two other states. As of April 5, health authorities confirmed 481 measles cases in Texas, a 14% increase from the previous week.
One of the most alarming developments occurred in Lubbock, where six infants and toddlers at a day care center tested positive for the virus over the past two weeks. Two of these young children required hospitalization. In total, 56 people have been hospitalized due to measles since the outbreak began in Texas. Nationwide, at least 628 cases have been reported in 21 states and Washington, D. C. , though experts warn the actual number may be significantly higher. Many individuals are not being tested, which could be leading to an underestimation of the true scope of the outbreak.
Health officials are urgently encouraging parents to vaccinate their children to help stem the spread of the disease. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is 97% effective in preventing infection when administered in two doses. The first dose is typically given to children between 12 and 18 months of age, with a second dose administered around age five. In response to the outbreak, officials have also approved early vaccination for babies as young as six months.
