Jamie Carragher's son gets first international call-up but won't be playing for England
Mar 15, 2025

James Carragher's form at Wigan Athletic has earned him an opportunity on the international stage, receiving his first call-up - although it hasn't come from Thomas Tuchel

The son of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has received his first international call-up - for Malta.
James Carragher, 22, has been a regular for League One side Wigan Athletic this season, making 25 appearances across all competitions. The right-footed centre-back, just like his dad, scored his first senior goal back in January to help Wigan beat Bristol Rovers 2-0.
Dad Jamie played 38 times for England across his trophy-laden career but son James will represent a different country. The Wigan star, who came through the Latics' academy, was awarded Maltese citizenship last month.
James qualifies for Malta via his paternal grandfather. Jamie has also been awarded Maltese citizenship and will hope to see his son make his international debut this month when Malta host Finland in their opening World Cup qualifying match next Friday.
Emilio De Leo's will side then travel to face Poland, a game which could see Carragher come up against star striker Robert Lewandowski. Last month, Malta Football Association president Bjorn Vassallo confirmed that discussions with Carragher had been ongoing for a number of months.
"We've been in talks with James and his father Jamie for the last few months now; he is open to it, but we're still working on it," Vassallo is quoted as saying.
