Yes, you read that right—cockroach milk is being hailed as the next big thing in superfoods. Before you cringe, science says it might just be one of the most nutrient-dense substances out there.
Researchers from the Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in India discovered that the Pacific beetle cockroach (Diploptera punctata) produces protein-rich milk to feed its young. Surprisingly, this milk is packed with essential amino acids, healthy fats, and three times the energy content of regular dairy milk as per the Journal of the International Union of Crystallography
So why is the wellness world buzzing about it? Nutritionist Dr Subramanian Ramaswamy explains that cockroach milk contains highly stable protein crystals, which release nutrients slowly, providing sustained energy—perfect for endurance athletes and those looking for long-lasting nourishment.
Some researchers in the Science Alert publication even speculate that it could become a sustainable alternative to dairy, given its high nutritional value and lower environmental impact compared to traditional livestock farming.
But before you start searching for cockroach milk lattes, the above source suggests that you know that commercial production is still a long way off. It is stated that extracting this nutrient powerhouse isn’t exactly easy, and large-scale farming of cockroaches for milk remains an ethical and logistical challenge.
