Chase Briscoe Breaks Silence After Controversial NASCAR Penalty is Reversed
Mar 9, 2025
Chase Briscoe has broken his silence ahead of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway, sharing his relief after the National Motorsports Appeals Panel overturned a penalty against him and Joe Gibbs Racing for an alleged violation of the rules involving a car component during the Daytona 500 race weekend.
Briscoe and his team were handed an L2 penalty after NASCAR spotted a modified spoiler base on his #19 Toyota, which is a violation of sections 14.1 and 14.5.8 of the regulations. The penalty for the alleged violation was a staggering fine of $100,000, the loss of 100 team points, and 10 playoff points on Joe Gibbs Racing, while Briscoe was stripped of 100 driver points and 10 playoff points.
The appeals panel, comprising Dixon Johnston, Hunter Nickell, and Cathy Rice, reversed the penalty after noting in its findings that holes were drilled on the spoiler base so the team could attach it to the rear deck. The panel ruled out a modification of the single-source part.
Consequently, Briscoe and Joe Gibbs Racing were both delighted and relieved, since the harsh penalty could have put them at a huge disadvantage early in the season. Briscoe has now opened up about the feeling of having 100 points returned ahead of the Shriners Children's 500 at Phoenix. He told Dustin Long of NBC Sports on X:
