Plans for 'neglected' building split opinion, as reader insists 'stop this please'
Mar 4, 2025
A planning application has been submitted to Middlesbrough Development Corporation (MDC) for a change of use of the former Dunes Amusements building in Middlesbrough town centre
Teesside Live readers have been having their say on the proposed transformation of a former amusement arcade and bar into an eight-bed House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) in Middlesbrough. The building, previously known as Dunes Amusements, is situated at the junction of Grange Road and Linthorpe Road in the town centre.
The planning agent has highlighted that the property has been empty for over two years and emphasised the economic advantages of approving the change of use. However, local councillors have voiced objections to the plan, citing an excess of HMOs in the vicinity and raising safety issues.
The application, put forward by Total Planning Solutions on behalf of Starflex Systems Ltd, is currently under review by planning officers. It's important to note that the planning authority for this application is the Middlesbrough Development Corporation (MDC), not Middlesbrough Council.
MDC oversees planning applications within the approved boundary, which encompasses much of Middlehaven and the town centre. This includes the section of Linthorpe Road stretching from Wilson Street to Borough Road when it comes to planning matters.
