DCI Tom Barnaby will be returning to Midsomer Murders but not in the way fans would expect
John Nettles has spoken out following the revelation that DCI Tom Barnaby is set for a comeback - albeit with a twist that might surprise fans.
John, who portrayed the detective in Midsomer Murders until 2011 before being succeeded by his on-screen cousin John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon), will see his character revived not on screen but in a forthcoming stage production. The play, which adapts the beloved ITV detective series, is slated to kick off in October.
Discussing the return of his iconic role, John shared with Hello: "Such anticipation! I'm thrilled to hear that the exploits of those in Midsomer's Badger's Drift are being brought to the stage. How exciting!"
The stage adaptation, crafted by theatre director Guy Unsworth, takes its cue from the pilot episode, Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger's Drift, based on Caroline Graham's novel.
The theatrical run is set to commence at Richmond Theatre on 24 October and will continue through to April 2026. Yet, the casting for Tom Barnaby and his trusty sidekick, Sergeant Gavin Troy, remains under wraps, reports the Express.
The plot summary for the stage show states: "When well-loved spinster Emily Simpson is found dead in the picturesque village of Badger's Drift, her friend Lucy Bellringer refuses to accept it was an accident. DCI Tom Barnaby and Sergeant Gavin Troy are called in to investigate, uncovering a world of hidden passions, long-buried secrets and deadly rivalries.
