5 ways a mini PC can make for the perfect NAS
Feb 19, 2025
When deciding what to use for your Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device, there's an array of options available. You can use an old PC, a dedicated server, a turnkey NAS, or even a mini PC. Mini PCs may not be the first choice for most simply because of their compact nature and how limiting their storage options are, but there are some good reasons why a mini PC would make for a good NAS, particularly if you don't mind using an external enclosure or Direct-Attached Storage (DAS) to increase its capacity.
5 Mini PCs have internal storage
Store all the things
A mini PC is a great compact system for getting work done and even playing some games. This is all thanks to the hardware contained within. Most (if not all) mini PCs will also have internal storage in the form of M.2 slots and SATA ports. The former is brilliant as it supports the fastest SSDs, so long as the platform inside the PC can utilize PCIe. SATA ports can hook up 2.5-inch SSDs that can be found with up to 8TB of capacity, making them a great (yet expensive) starting point for a custom NAS.
The more storage you can install without resorting to external enclosures, the better.
