A 60-second boiler switch could save £163 a year, an expert has said. iHeat experts have explained how households could be making a cool £13 monthly saving can be achieved by simply setting your boiler to "condensing mode".
Condensing mode for British Gas, OVO, EDF, EON and Octopus refers to the condition in which the boiler’s water temperature drops below 54°C. In this state, it recovers the lost heat from the water that has already run through the radiators. A central heating system’s temperature should ideally be around 70°C – enough for most households to activate the boiler’s condensing mode.
But it depends on the building’s design and size, the number and size of its radiators, and if it is well-insulated. Heating Engineer Stephen Day advised: "Lowering the flow temperature of your boiler is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to improve boiler efficiency.
"It's a quick adjustment that can save energy and money without sacrificing home comfort." By adjusting the boiler's flow temperature down to 60 degrees Celsius, it enters 'condensing mode', which can lead to an annual saving of up to £163 for the average household.
