Is Rubbing a Banana Peel on Your Face as Good as Botox? Derms Explain

TikTok has led the charge on quite a few trends, and some are pretty questionable. Among the latest is a trend where users rub empty banana peels on their faces in pursuit of better skin.
People are even claiming the practice , similar to the results achieved by Botox.
“The source of this trend probably comes from the fact that , and by extension their peels, have a lot of nutrients—vitamin C, vitamin A, and other nutrients,” Helen He, MD, an assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai, told Verywell.
The trend may also be inspired by a desire to cut back on waste.
“In some ways, I feel happy people are trying to use byproducts,” Zakia Rahman, MD, FAAD, a clinical professor of dermatology at Stanford, told Verywell. “Bananas are one of the most commonly eaten fruits, and we [often] end up wasting the majority of it.”
Should Banana Peels Be Used as Skincare?
According to the experts, no research suggests that rubbing a banana peel on your face will improve the appearance of your skin. The same goes for the claim that banana peel facials are equivalent to Botox.
Botox injections weaken or paralyze facial muscles or block certain nerves in the face to temporarily reduce wrinkles. “But there’s nothing in banana peels that has that effect,” Rahman said.
Though bananas have many health benefits, the we get from don’t necessarily translate when used as skincare. “The vitamin C in bananas isn’t exactly formulated to penetrate the skin barrier and get absorbed into the dermis where you would have the benefits of these ingredients,” He said.
