'I Like to Believe He'd Be Proud of Me': Ralph Macchio Remembers Pat Morita 41 Years After The Karate Kid
Feb 7, 2025
actor Ralph Macchio says he feels like he has a “responsibility” to keep up the legacy of the franchise. In a new interview with GamesRadar+, Macchio talked about playing the role of Daniel LaRusso throughout the years as well as the new Karate Kid: Legends film and the final season of Cobra Kai.
Cobra Kai returns to Netflix on Feb. 13 with the final five episodes of the series’ sixth and final season. The show, set about 40 years after the 1984 original film, features Macchio reprising his role as Daniel as well as William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence and sees the pair running two competing karate dojos.

“Paying the Legacy Forward”

“Throughout the Cobra Kai series, there have been those mentor moments, those parenting moments. So paying the legacy forward is kind of part of what Daniel LaRusso does now as an adult and will do in the Karate Kid: Legends film when that comes out, the end of May,” Macchio said. He added that with the movie he’s “really excited about that other chapter within the grand universe of sharing stories. But for Cobra Kai, where my focus is now, it was about landing that plane in that you know, big winning way, and I’m super proud of that.”
In the upcoming Karate Kid: Legends, Macchio is joined by Jackie Chan, who is reprising his role as Mr. Han from the 2010 The Karate Kid film. Macchio’s Daniel is living in Okinawa in the movie, which is set about three years after the events of Cobra Kai. It also stars Ben Wang, who is training to be the next “karate kid.”
