'I compared BT and Sky broadband over two months - but found a better provider'
Jan 25, 2025
Sky or BT? One reporter preferred something else entirely
If you had told me a decade ago that UK households would be able to get internet download speeds in excess of 1Gbps, I'd likely have laughed you out of the room. I spent enough evenings leaving a console on overnight to download the latest games to truly appreciate how convenient these modern high speeds actually are.
However, these top speeds can come with some pretty hefty prices, with telecom companies like EE charging £74.99 per month for their top-spec packages. It's also easy to fall into the trap of thinking that brand loyalty will net you the best deal - but in 2025, it seems that's no longer the way to go.
I had a first-hand experience of this myself, as Virgin wanted to hike my £48 per month contract up to £65 for the same gigabit speeds upon the contract renewal date. After shopping around, I was able to get the same speeds cheaper with EE, but it's not just me who has experienced the same issue.
Writing for LancsLive, Amy Fenton describes how she recently shopped around for a new broadband provider. Trying out the likes of BT, Sky, and Brsk, there was one that took the top spot in terms of both speed, affordability, and price.
Here's what Amy said:
Before December I'd stuck with BT for a good few years but was shocked when I realised I was paying £76 a month. Given the cost of living crisis I decided to shop around to find something a bit more reasonable.
