10 Most Powerful 4.0 Liter Engines Ever
Dec 24, 2024
Throughout automotive history, the 4.0-liter engine has been many things – it’s been large, and it’s been small; it’s been meek, and it’s been mighty; it’s been ordinary, and it’s been unconventional.
The 4.0-liter displacement, when applied to internal combustion engines, is relative. It has come in many configurations, from four cylinders to 12 and from inline to V-formation. It seems just about every manufacturer in the 100+ years of the automobile has at some point included a four-liter engine in its products. The most powerful of these are shoved into . It’s so widely recognized that some manufacturers even call their engines “4.0” when the displacement is “close enough,” or just to give an engine that extra cachet over a rival’s 3.9-liter offering.
A four-liter can be a four, six, eight, and even a tiny V12 . And power bands are all over the engine map, with some straight-six 4.0-liter engines making just barely over 150 hp, and some V8s offering great power, topping 800 hp. There is probably no greater databank of engine variations than those with 4.0-liter displacements, so we had to break them down into comparable chunks. We chose to look at the 10 most powerful.
How we got our engine selections: Hot Cars looked at past and present 4.0-liter engines to discover the 10 with the highest factory-rated horsepower, according to their respective manufacturer’s reporting in accordance with SAE standards. Other sources such as various media outlets (cited, where appropriate), were researched to provide context and enrich information but did not factor into the final rankings, which are presented in ascending order from lowest to highest.
