NXT first debuted on WWE programming in 2010 as a hybrid reality-wrestling show to find the next WWE superstar, before it later transitioned into WWE’s developmental brand, replacing FCW. From there, under the guidance of Triple H, NXT grew into WWE’s definitive third brand, becoming a ‘super-indie’ in many ways, and providing an alternative to both RAW and SmackDown.

The most acclaimed match of WWE’s pandemic era came when Gunther (then Walter) battled Ilja Dragunov on NXT UK. Of course, any match would be better with a live crowd, but these two used an empty arena to their advantage by simply beating the hell out of one another, allowing every strike, chop, and move to be delivered to the most impactful degree.
