’Tis the season to be merry. And for those of us who are partial to a red wine, there is no greater pleasure than pouring a nice glass preferably to be enjoyed beside a fire, or paired with the perfect canapé.
Nowadays, there is a whole host of delicious reds available in supermarkets for very decent prices, but how do you identify them while avoiding the duds?
Christine Austin, a wine writer with a vast amount of experience testing bottles, surveyed this year’s offerings to find out. Here, she shares her guide to the best 20 bottles of red wine out there….
Nice Drop Pinotage 2023
Western Cape, South Africa, £4.25, Asda
Unbeatable flavour for money in this wine. Chock full of black plum and blackberry flavours with a streak of spice and liquorice.
Pierre Jaurant Bordeaux 2021
France, £4.99, Aldi
Decent claret for under a fiver. Line this up against a cheese board and no-one will guess its price. Soft elegant black fruits with a touch of oak.
Cono Sur Bicicleta Pinot Noir 2023
Chile, £6 until 3 December with Clubcard then £7, Tesco
A red that everyone likes. Soft enough to go with salmon but it can take on a lamb chop or paté with crusty bread. Cherries, blackberries, and plums.
