MYSTERIOUS! Here's The Tallest Mountain In Nigeria; See Why It's Called The Mountain Of Death
Nov 12, 2024
Chappal Waddi, also known as Gangirwal, is Nigeria' s highest peak and stands at an impressive 2, 419 meters (7, 936 feet) on the Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State, near the Cameroon border. Known as the " Mountain of Death" in Fulfulde, a language of the Fulani people, this name references a difficult- to- navigate gully on the mountain' s southern side. Despite its ominous name, Chappal Waddi is accessible to hikers and has become a remarkable destination for those looking to explore Nigeria' s highlands.
Hiking to Chappal Waddi' s peak is a two- day journey, and preparation is essential. Hikers need proper camping equipment, clothing, and sufficient food and water. The climb itself is manageable, but it requires a reasonable level of fitness and readiness for the outdoors. The ascent rewards hikers with stunning, panoramic views stretching across Nigeria and into Cameroon. Along the way, campers can set up tents under open skies, enjoying Nigeria' s natural beauty in a unique, unspoiled setting.
Chappal Waddi lies on the edge of the Gashaka- Gumti National Park, Nigeria' s largest protected area, covering 6, 731 square kilometers (about three times the size of Greater London). Established in 1991, this park is a sanctuary for various ecosystems, from grasslands and forests to mountain ranges. Gashaka- Gumti is a haven for biodiversity, with elephants, chimpanzees, leopards, and numerous bird species.
