Standard Roads are expensive to build everywhere in the world, quality materials have to be used and engineers have to paid.According to the African Development Bank’s Annual Development Effectiveness Review 2013, Africa is considered to be the fastest-growing continent in the world. Infrastructure plays a significant role in the development of any nation and its overall economic growthGovernments of African countries with quality roads have much invested in them to contribute to sustainable development.
However we would all assume that the world’s most expensive road would be located in technological advanced countries like Japan, Singapore, China, or even the United States of America, but sorry to shock and burst your bubble, the most expensive road in the world is East Africa! Specifically East Africa nation, Uganda.
The Northern Bypass in Busega in the Ugandan capital city of Kampala is connected to the busiest airport in the nation, Entebbe International Airport, by the Kampala-Entebbe expressway. It was funded by the Government of Uganda with support of a soft loan from the EXIM bank of China totaling to US$470 million. As of now, road works stand at 75 percent progress with hope of completion by end of 2017.
The road starts at ‘Abayita Ababiri’, on the old Kampala-Entebbe Road, goes through Ssisa, Kajjansi, Kabojja, and ends at Busega, where it joins the Northern bypass.A spur branches off the highway at Kajjansi, to connect to Munyonyo, a Kampala suburb, a distance of about 14km.
