Ghanaian Car Number Plates: What You Need to Know
Nov 1, 2024
Let's break down the meaning behind Ghanaian vehicle registration plates, making it easier to understand.
In Ghana, every vehicle has a unique registration plate with a combination of letters and numbers. The first two letters indicate the region where the vehicle was registered, such as "GR" for Greater Accra or "AS" for Ashanti. This helps identify where the vehicle comes from.
The next two digits represent the year the vehicle was registered. For example, "22" means the vehicle was registered in 2022. This information helps track how old the vehicle is.
Its also important to note the colors of the number plates you see always. Each colour has its meaning. Yellow means the vehicle is for commercial while white indicates that it’s private.
The final four characters are a unique code made up of letters and numbers, making each plate one-of-a-kind.
Some examples to illustrate this:
•  GR-1234-22: This vehicle was registered in Greater Accra in 2022.
•  AS-9876-20: This vehicle was registered in Ashanti in 2020.
•  WP-4567-19: This vehicle was registered in Western Province in 2019.
Additionally, certain plates have special meanings:
•  "DV" plates are for diplomatic vehicles, indicating the vehicle is used for diplomatic purposes.
•  "GV" plates are for government vehicles, showing the vehicle is owned and used by the government.
