Anton Ferdinand says Edinson Cavani needs ‘education’ from Manchester United as Uruguay forward faces FA investigation over ‘racist’ social media post
Nov 30, 2020
Anton Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to give Edinson Cavani ‘an education’ after he used an offensive term on social media on Sunday.
The Uruguay international inspired United to a comeback 3-2 victory over Southampton on Sunday afternoon , with two goals and an assist after coming off the bench at half-time.
But Cavani has now found himself in hot water for the post on Instagram, which appeared shortly after the victory and has now been deleted.
Replying to a message of congratulations, Cavani wrote in Spanish: ‘Gracias negrito’.
Ferdinand was himself at the centre of a Premier League racism storm almost a decade ago when the FA found John Terry guilty of using racially abusive language towards him during QPR’s clash with Chelsea at Loftus Road.
The former Blues skipper was fined £220,000 and banned for four matches by the FA and subsequently lost the England captaincy.
And speaking on Monday’s talkSPORT’s Breakfast, the former centre-back urged Manchester United to take action with Cavani following his remarks.
“This is a prime example of where Cavani is a product of his environment,” said Ferdinand. “To him that isn’t offensive, but in our country and where we are, it is.
“The education needs to be imposed and it has to come from the club he’s at and the dressing room he’s in.”
