Virgil van Dijk injured in Merseyside derby as Jordan Pickford gets away with SHOCKING tackle on Liverpool defender
Oct 17, 2020
There was a dramatic start to Saturday’s Merseyside derby, as Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk was forced off with a knee injury after a SHOCKING tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The England No.1 was lucky to escape a red card after scything the Dutchman down in the box, clattering into his knee with a reckless challenge.
It appeared a certain penalty and sending off, but after a VAR review it was clear Van Dijk was offside when he was put through on goal, and so Pickford was spared.
Van Dijk wasn’t so fortunate, though, as he limped off inside ten minutes to be replaced by Joe Gomez.
This all took place after Liverpool claimed an early lead through Sadio Mane, who marked his return to the Reds team with a cool close-range finish after a sweeping move to put the visitors 1-0 up at Goodison Park.
Everton didn’t wait long to equalise, though, with Michael Keane making it 1-1 in the 19th minute with a simple header from a corner.
And once again, Reds No.2 Adrian will take the blame, as the Spanish goalkeeper should have done much better.
