Romelu Lukaku has set a new record by scoring in his ninth consecutive Europa League match during Inter’s win over Bayer Leverkusen on Monday evening.
The former Manchester United striker equalled Alan Shearer’s record which has stood since 2005 by scoring in Inter’s 2-0 win over Getafe last Wednesday.
But the Belgium international overtook the former Newcastle United striker by putting Antonio Conte’s side two ahead against Leverkusen in their quarter-final clash.
Nicolo Barella’s sublime strike from the edge of the area had opened the scoring for Inter before Lukaku doubled their lead.
But Chelsea’s top transfer target Kai Havertz pulled a goal back for Leverkusen.
But Inter held out to secure a 2-1 win over Leverkusen and Conte’s side will now play either Shakhtar Donetsk or FC Basel in the semi-final on August 17.
After completing his £74 million move from United to Inter last summer, Lukaku has scored 31 goals for the Italian club.
‘His great season is thanks to the team, how they are supporting him,’ Conte said last week.
‘Lautaro is also having a great season, remember that he has been at the centre of rumours.
‘Congratulations should be paid to them but also to the work of the team.
‘I’m happy with Lukaku’s settling in, helped by the fact that he has found good guys with whom he has formed a beautiful relationship.’
