BREAKING NEWS: Cop, 3 Others KILLED As Police Officers, Hunters Clash In Oyo State [SEE WHY]

July. 30, 2020

Three people and one policeman have been confirmed killed in a gunfight that broke out amongst police, hunters, and members of a vigilante group in Okeho town in Kajola Local Government Area, Oyo State on Thursday.
Report shows the fight is about an arrested robbery suspect.
Residents of the community have reportedly insisted on killing the suspect arrested alive while the policemen rejected the jungle justice approach, insisting the robber must been taken into custody.
Some armed robbers had on Wednesday evening attacked a branch of First Bank in the town and killed a policeman.
Four of the armed robbers were said to have been killed by hunters who blocked the road and prevented them from escaping. The corpses were later burnt by the angry residents.
The hunters were said to have pursued the other two robbers that escaped and while one was arrested alive, the corpse of the injured one was recovered from the bush.
One of the residents who preferred not to be mentioned told ThePunch that “there is a serious crisis in Okeho now”.
He said, “Somebody was accidentally shot dead by the police while they were attempting to take away the armed robber arrested by the hunters.
“Residents also fought back and killed a policeman. This infuriated the policemen and they opened fire on the crowd and killed two more persons.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Mr Olugbenga Fadeyi, did not answer the calls from the newspaper and has yet to reply to the text message sent to him on the incident.
Scooper had meanwhile reported how armed robbers, on Wednesday, launched a ferocious attack on a bullion van in Ebonyi State, killing four police officers escorting the vehicle.
The robbers, it was learnt, attempted unsuccessfully to hijack the bullion van at Ezzamgbo junction, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.
The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the killing of the security officials, hours after the incident occurred.
A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Loveth Odah, explained that the policemen were escorting the bullion van to one of the first-generation banks along Ogoja Road in Abakaliki, the state capital.
According to the police public relations officer in Ebonyi, the driver of the van and other officers sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries during the encounter.
She noted that the bullion van was trapped in traffic at Ezzamgbo around the flyover in the area which was still under construction.

Odah said the assailants stormed the scene of the attack in two vehicles and took advantage of the traffic to open fire on the security operatives.
She, however, disclosed that the robbers were unable to succeed in carting away the money as the bullion van driver was able to escape.
The command’s spokesman stated that the robbers were forced to turn back to neighbouring Enugu State after the failed operation.
She said the bodies of the policemen have been deposited at the morgue and others who sustained injuries have been taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki for treatment.
