Mabior Garang de Mabior, the eldest son of South Sudan’s founding father, the late Dr John Garang de Mabior, has resigned from Sudan’s Liberation Movement in Opposition led by the first Vice President Dr Riek Machar.
In his resignation letter dated July 12, Mabior said he lost faith in the vision and principle of the party to implement the reforms and transformation of South Sudan into the nation his father envisioned. Mabior said that his father had a vision of a new South Sudan which does not represent a geographical idea but a philosophical concept.
“The vision of a new Sudan was the modernization of our societies and the restoration of the greatness of our people. I believed that Dr Riek Machar possessed the leadership and vision to modernize South Sudan and transform it into a great society, but I was sadly mistaken,” Mabior’s letter reads in part.
He accuses Machar of a litany of things which include nepotism and favouritism which saw him appoint his wife Angelina Teny as the Minister of Defence, appointing very junior people in the SPLM-IO like Pout Kang Chol as a minister of Petroleum and Elizabeth Acuei minister of health.
“Dr Riek Machar should have appointed competent, intelligent, and knowledgeable ministers to deliver and promote the SPLM (IO) values of good governance and reforms to improve the lives of South Sudanese,” Mabior said.
