Burnley and Sheffield United dent each other’s European hopes but Clarets climb above Tottenham after Turf Moor draw
Jul 5, 2020
Burnley and Sheffield United couldn’t be separated at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon as both their European dreams took a hit with a 1-1 draw.
John Egan ensured the high-flying Blades grabbed a point after James Tarkowski had put the Clarets in charge.
Shorn of Ben Mee, replaced by Kevin Long, but able to play the returning Jay Rodriguez on a windy afternoon, Burnley had an excellent early chance but saw it spurned by Matej Vydra.
Sander Berge had an opportunity as the Blades hit back and they felt they could have had a penalty too.
Erik Pieters’ handball was ruled accidental by VAR though, leaving Clarets boss Sean Dyche breathing a sigh of relief.
You could sense Chris Wilder’s United side were growing into the game with Berge and others missing chances but they were behind just before the break. Tarkowski beating Oli McBurnie at the back post to slide the ball home.
McNeil’s delivery to the edge of the area was nodded on by Rodriguez to find the England defender in acres after he got beyond his marker. He easily poked home.
Having won 12 of their last 13 home Premier League games when they have scored first, a win for Dyche’s men was on the cards.
Alan Brazil’s hatred of VAR just keeps increasing - It's a joke, stick it!
Sheffield United, though, showed they had some fight left and a early substitution saw them tinker with their formation too, placing McBurnie, David McGoldrick, and Billy Sharp all on the pitch at the same time.
