Just as nutrient-dense foods can protect you against disease; nutrient-void, processed foods have been linked to disease. From type II diabetes to cancer, it’s important that you re-evaluate your weekly grocery shopping list. Starting with the 8 foods below, it’s time to clear out your fridge and pantry — never buying these items again.
Stay Away From These 8 Foods — For Good!
We all love a treat or two every now and again, but regularly consuming ‘garbage’ foods can wreak havoc on your overall health. What tastes great short-term can cause a growing list of long-term health complications. You may not have even realized that the foods below are bad for you — which is even more reason to re-evaluate your current diet.
When you think of fruit juice, you think vitamin C and other micronutrients. The truth is, fruit juice can be nearly as bad as soda. Sure, juice offers more nutrients that soda, but it is the high levels of fructose that you need to be concerned with. Although our bodies utilize glucose, fructose is processed in the liver where it is then converted into fat.
Wait a minute… isn’t fish a highly recommended food? There’s no doubt that wild fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and B-vitamins — but there’s a dark side to farmed fish. Other than moral concerns regarding the treatment of these fish, farmed salmon and tilapia are fed low-quality food and are exposed to potent toxins.
Popcorn is said to be high in fiber, making it a great low-calorie snack — but only when it’s made using traditional air-popped methods. Microwave popcorn is packed full of questionable ingredients and the bags are lined with nonstick chemicals. Linked to a range of diseases, including cancer, these chemicals aren’t necessary in order to enjoy your favorite movie snack.
Margarine was first invented to ‘save the day’ — as it was considered to be a heart-healthy option. As society moved away from more natural sources of fat, such as butter, chemically processed margarine took its place. High in trans fats — sources of these dangerous fats have actually been linked to heart disease. Even those that are ‘trans fat free,’ are still not naturally derived.
Although created from natural sources, there is nothing natural about this finished product. Like margarine, these oils create inflammation in the body. Typically genetically modified, these types of oils have been linked to anything from digestive disorders to heart problems. Instead, opt for cold-pressed coconut oil.
