Coronavirus: We’re disappointed in government- Ghanaian students in Wuhan
Feb. 14, 2020
Ghanaian students living in Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus, say they are disappointed in government over its refusal to evacuate them from the city.
“We’re disappointed in the government. We’re basically being treated like prisoners. We were so hopeful that our government was coming to get us as was announced [by Ghana’s embassy in Beijing] that we’ll be leaving on Tuesday or Wednesday.
“Then all of a sudden, they’re saying they want to give each student in Wuhan $500. Majority of us don’t need that money” President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in Wuhan, Michael Addy told TV3.
The students, on several occasions, appealed to government to evacuate them back home, over fears of being infected with the virus, but the Health Ministry says that will only be done when they find it necessary.
Calls for their evacuation was also shot down by the Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Health, Dr Badu Sarkodie, who said the decision would have dire implications.
Joining the fray is the Minority in Parliament. The opposition MPs gave the government a three-day ultimatum to immediately evacuate all Ghanaians living in China.
The ultimatum is expected to end Friday on February 14, 2020.
But even before the ultimatum ends, the Ministry of Health says it is still monitoring the situation in China to determine its next move which includes a possible evacuation.
Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, accused the government of turning a deaf ear to the plight of Ghanaians in China.
These allegations have been rejected by the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Habib Tijani, who said the government has released $250,000 to assist the students in the purchase of nose masks and other essentials to protect themselves.
The epidemic has so far claimed over 1,300 lives with over 43,000 people being infected.
Ghanaian students in Wuhan have also accused the government of abandoning them. According to them, other nations have evacuated their citizens from Wuhan.
