LOOK BUT DONT TOUCH! Nerazzurri Name Price For Lautaro Martinez But Manchester Utd Balk At Fee
Feb. 09, 2020
Manchester United made an enquiry to Inter Milan over a summer move for Lautaro Martinez but were told they would have to pay up his full release clause. The Red Devils are in the market for a new striker, having missed out on Erling Haaland – who moved to German giants Borussia Dortmund instead – and were only able to bring in Odion Ighalo on a short-term loan on deadline day. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been left light up front, having sold Romelu Lukaku and let Alexis Sanchez leave on loan last summer, and United will make recruiting a forward one of their top priorities.
According to The Times, they believe Martinez is the ideal fit and made contact with Inter over a potential summer deal but were told they would have to pay his full £94million asking price. The Italian side, who are fighting for the Serie A title, have no desire to lose the forward and are willing to play hardball with any team who tries to sign Martinez, with United ‘balking’ at the price tag of a player who cost just £20m in 2018. The clause in Martinez’s contract is only active for the first two weeks of July, meaning Inter could demand even more if no club bids £94m during that brief window.
United are not the only club interested in Martinez, who has enjoyed an excellent campaign, with Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona among the teams looking at him. The 22-year-old has scored 11 goals in 20 Serie A appearances this season, dovetailing brilliantly with Romelu Lukaku, while he also netted five times in the Champions League.Barcelona are believed to be the frontrunners to land Martinez, with the Catalan side eager to refresh their ageing attack. Inter are in a strong position to demand a massive fee for the Argentine forward though, who is still contracted to the club until 2023, though he is believed to be tempted by a move to Camp Nou and a potential link up with countryman Lionel Messi.
