Michael Cohen calls for early release from prison
Jan. 11, 2020
Michael Cohen , President Trump ’s former personal attorney, is requesting an early release from prison.
In a letter filed in a Manhattan federal court Friday, Cohen wrote that federal prosecutors were “using innuendo, conjecture, and inaccurate opinions as a basis for urging the court’s denial of the pending motion.”
He added that prosecutors who oppose reducing his prison sentence from three years to one are engaged in a campaign of “continued ‘character assassination’” and that they “stubbornly” refuse to note the gravity of the more than 170 hours of testimony he gave to multiple government agencies, as well as congressional lawmakers.
Cohen is currently serving his sentence in a federal prison in Otisville, N.Y,. after pleading guilty in 2018 to campaign finance violations and lying to Congress, among other charges. He officially began his sentence in May.
Prosecutors argued in their own court filing that the evidence Cohen offered did not include substantial enough information to warrant such a reduction.
Cohen, who had for years maintained strict loyalty to Trump before cooperating with authorities in the face of intense legal scrutiny, gave assistance to federal and state prosecutors in New York, the office of former special counsel Robert Mueller and different congressional committees.
His testimony largely revolved around Trump’s reported efforts during the campaign to make hush money payments to two women with whom he allegedly had affairs, as well as Trump's dealings with Russia.
