It’s all systems go for Jo’burg mayoral election

Dec. 03, 2019

It’s all systems go for the mayoral election in the City of Johannesburg on Wednesday.
The City Council will finally elect a new mayor to replace Herman Mashaba in a council sitting on Wednesday.
After suspending proceedings last week, Speaker of the Council Vasco Ga Gama has confirmed that the election will finally take place on Wednesday.
The ANC, EFF, and the DA are all battling it out to take control of the City of Johannesburg.
Geoff Makhubo, Musa Novela and DA’s Funzi Ngobeni will be hoping that their respective parties gain majority votes to win the mayoral election.
With no party having the required 136 majority seats to form a government, negotiations are expected to continue even before the council sittings begin.
The ANC has made it clear that it wants to retain control of the City, after having lost it in 2016 local government elections.
The party senior national leaders continue to engage with numerous parties such as the EFF and IFP to vote with it during the Council voting.
However, it is expected that the DA might retain power in the City, should it offer Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to the EFF.
The EFF, who are seen as kingmakers in the Council with 30 seats, had made it clear that it will support the DA only if get to take over the Capital City.
