28 November 2019 – in North west province – suspects are expected to appear at the Klerksdorp and Jouberton Magistrate’s Courts respectively on Thursday for illegal possession of fire-arms and contravention of the National Environment Management-Biodiversity (NEMBA) Act.
Their arrest follows an intelligence driven operation by the Hawks’ serious Organised Crime Investigation unit with members of Crime Intelligence, National Intervention Unit and the Illicit mining group led to the arrest of three suspects aged 23, 35 and 43 in Klerksdorp and Hartbeesfontein on 26 November.
The first suspect was arrested at a farm near Klerksdorp where he was found in possession of a hunting rifle, shotgun, revolver, pistol and a large quantity of empty cartridges and live ammunition. Further probing into the discovered firearms led the investigative team to another farm in Hartbeesfontein where two additional suspects were arrested after an assortment of firearms and ammunition were found which included a rifle, hunting rifle, pistol and revolver. Additionally, hundred rhino horns were found, four tiger carcasses and one thousand US dollars. All exhibits were seized for further investigation.

With just over an hour after unknown suspects fired several shots and robbed a business in the Bellville CBD where they took cellphones and other items, members of the Western Cape Flying Squad caught up with the suspects and arrested two early this morning. They recovered a vehicle, 17 cellphones as well as two firearms in Mfuleni.
Of the cellphones recovered, one belongs to a 42 year old off duty police officer who was shot dead in a robbery in Delft South earlier in the evening. In the robbery the policeman’s cellphone was taken.
He was a detective attached to Elsies River police.
Police investigations are yet to determine if the firearms seized are linked to the murder of the of the Elsies River detective.
Further investigations that are currently underway are looking into whether there were other suspects involved and all could be linked other serious crime incidents.
Indications are that more arrests are imminent as the DPCI detectives pursue several leads.
The two arrested suspects aged 26 and 32 are expected to appear in court soon.
