MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has rejected proposed class suspensions in Metro Manila in the duration of the 30 th South East Asian Games.
This was in response to calls for the President to suspend classes to help ease traffic congestion in the course of the regional games.
According to records, around 19 locations across Metro Manila were chosen to hold several SEA Games events.
“Kung ako ang estudyante niyan, palakpak lang ako nang palakpak. Kung gusto niya Olympics na lang araw-araw, (If I were the student, I would be happy clapping. I would wish it’s Olympics every day),” the Chief Executive said.
“I do not agree. That’s too long. That’s too long. That is simply too long,” he added.
Meanwhile, the group Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas is asking the President to offer free admission to the SEA Games so that more Filipinos can support the Philippine Team and to maximize the home court advantage.
“Unfortunately, I’m not the deciding authority there. I have to defer to the organizer,” he said.
President Duterte said that as much as he would want to, the contracts between SEA Games organizers and the private sector do not allow it as several venues require funds for maintenance.
“Sabi ng organizers, wala tayong panggastos sa, (the organizers said we have no funds for the) miscellaneous expenses, maybe or a little money to go by. There’s not much money to go around in the first place,” the President said.
“If they are doing it because they’re trying to save, I agree. Pero kung ako, libre lahat, (for me, I want it all free ,) ” he explained.
The President noted, however, that government-owned venues may be accessed for free. – MNP (with details from Rosalie Coz)
