On this day in 2001, David Beckham scored a THAT free-kick for England against Greece
Oct. 06, 2019
David Beckham had a turbulent England career.
He was public enemy number one after being sent off against Argentina in the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
Beckham kicked out at Diego Simeone and he was blamed for England crashing out of the competition.
This abuse from England fans went on for a couple of years but that didn't deter Beckham from giving his all for his country.
He was given the captaincy in 2000 and he finally earned redemption on this day 18 years ago.

On October 6 2001, England needed a win or a draw against Greece in order to qualify outright for the 2002 World Cup.
However, the Three Lions were 2-1 down going into stoppage time and desperately needed a goal to progress.
They were given a golden opportunity with the final kick of the game when Teddy Sheringham was fouled 25 yards from goal.
Fortunately England had Beckham on the pitch, one of the best set-piece takes in the world.
"Beckham could raise the roof here with a goal..."
The crowd went silent as Beckham stood over the ball. He had the chance to finally cement his reputation as villain to national hero.
And he didn't disappoint.
Beckham stepped up and unleashed an unstoppable effort that crashed into the top corner, leaving Antonios Nikopolidis stranded.
"I don't believe it. David Beckham scores the goal to take England all the way to the World Cup Finals! Give that man a knighthood!"
Beckham reacted to the goal today on Instagram, writing : "This was an amazing moment for me, as soon as it left my foot I knew it was going in!!! I can still hear the cheers today, thank you to the fans for making this one of the best days of my life, so proud 🏴❤️"
What a moment.
Beckham never looked back from there and went on to make 115 appearances for his country.
His goal against Greece will go down as one of the greatest moments in England history.
