Ally McCoist agrees with ex-Liverpool star Danny Murphy over ‘nonsense’ guards of honour and says he even hates pre-match handshakes
Jun 30, 2020
Ally McCoist totally agrees with former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy that guards of honour are ‘a load of nonsense’.
The Rangers legend doesn’t even like to see players shaking hands before matches, let alone fulfilling the tradition of applauding the newly-crowned league champions onto the pitch.
Murphy saw his name trending on social media on Tuesday morning after he slammed the guard of honour tradition .
Manchester City players are set to lead out title rivals Liverpool and applaud their squad onto the pitch when the two sides meet on Thursday, after the Reds deposed Pep Guardiola’s men as Premier League champions last week.
It will be a moment to savour for Liverpool fans, who will no doubt enjoy rubbing City faces in their brilliant title win – but Murphy believes the pageantry will be ‘uncomfortable’ for both sets of players.
The former Anfield star also angered fans by saying it’s outrageous world-class City ace Kevin De Bruyne will be ‘clapping for players who can’t even lace his boots’.

But, while a host of social media users hammered Murphy for his views, McCoist told talkSPORT that he agrees.
“I’m not sure it is the right thing to do,” said the Rangers legend on the talkSPORT Breakfast .
