Meaning of Eid Al-Adha
Eid al Adha, also known as Eid ul Adha or the Festival/Feast of the Sacrifice marks the date when Ibrahim (Abraham) was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his son, Ishmael , in order to show his devotion.
When Ibrahim was about to sacrifice Ishmael, Allah saw his devotion and provided him with a lamb to slaughter instead. This account is similar to what is found in Christian and Jewish scriptures where God asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. God then provides Abraham with a lamb instead just as he is about to sacrifice Isaac.
The story is commonly used in both religions to show devotion to Allah (God) and willingness of his followers to accept the command. Although Ibrahim was tempted not to sacrifice his son, he went ahead because of his belief and obedience to Allah. But when he was just about to sacrifice Ishmael, Allah stopped him and praised his obedience. He then gave a lamb instead which Ibrahim sacrificed to Allah. After the sacrifice, the meat is distributed among the needy and the family of the one who sacrificed the sheep to god.
