Huge cash boost to regenerate remains of town's rich mining history

The town was one of 10 places across the South West chosen to benefit from the funding
It was once one of the wealthiest places in the world thanks to its thriving mining industry.
Now Redruth will be given a new lease of life thanks to a £1.6 million funding boost.
The town has been chosen as one of 10 places in the South West to benefit from the High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) programme, delivered by Historic England.
The £95 million government-funded programme aims to unlock the potential of the selected towns, fueling economic, social and cultural recovery.
Redruth is the only Cornish town that will benefit from the cash.
Meanwhile in Devon, Plymouth and Cullompton are set to receive a share of the money.
Tourism minister Nigel Huddleston MP was at the Eden Project this week and spoke to one of our reporters about Redruth's success.
He said: “The focus on Redruth is part of the heritage high street action zones programme - it is a particular focus on heritage assets and getting dilapidated or empty historic buildings back into use whether that is for retail or maybe for offices or also accommodation. Looking at the high street and trying to get footfall back in but in a way that isn’t just traditional retail but alternative options to really bring them back to life.
"For a very long period of time we have relied on retail to keep our high streets going and a lot of that has gone online, but our high streets weren’t always about retail they were about a whole host of things, for many many years you would have retail on the bottom and residential on top. Definitely trying to get buildings back into use with a cultural and arts element to that as well.
