Chris Smalling ‘gutted’ to be leaving Roma as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggests he will stay at Manchester United next season
Aug 4, 2020
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to welcome Chris Smalling back into his squad next season.
The 30-year-old has impressed on loan at Roma in 2019/20 and declared he was ‘gutted’ that he cannot finish the season with the Italian club after his spell ended this week.
Roma are still playing in the Europa League but were unable to reach an agreement with United to extend the central defender’s stay.
“I’m gutted that I can’t finish what we started this season,’ Smalling said in a message on Instagram.
“To experience the love shown to me in such a short time was extra special and it will not be forgotten.
“I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla. DAJE ROMA!”
Smalling made 30 league appearances for Roma in 2019/20, scoring three times, and was popular among the club’s fanbase.
His impressive form in Italy has now opened the door to another chance at Manchester United, with boss Solskjaer insisting he can still be of value at the club.
“I think Chris has shown over his career at Man United how valuable he is for Man United,” the Norwegian said in his press conference ahead of United’s Europa League last-16 second leg against LASK on Wednesday.
“This season was about him being a regular, going to Roma, showing and proving how good a centre-back he is. I wanted to give Harry (Maguire), Vic [Victor Lindelof], maybe Axel (Tuanzebe) a chance, so we found out that was the best for him to go to Roma, play for a year.
