Make Braai Day count this Heritage Day
Sep 24, 2020
Braai Day hopes to take that rich diversity and gather it around a fire to unite in the greatest and simplest form of hospitable acceptance, a shared meal.
Some South Africans may question why one seemingly random day in September is designated as Braai Day when arguably every day is potentially Braai Day in this beautiful land. As if a Stone Age sacrifice of our delicious cows, sheep and chickens to the gods of the great blue sun-kissed skies, this ancient ritual connects us to our very primal roots.
The choice of day is, of course, not random as 24 September is the anniversary of the death of the Zulu King, Shaka. As with many of our holidays, a day of significance underwent a re-branding to incorporate the rich diversity that symbolises the new moniker. Heritage Day is the day when we acknowledge the multitude of unique cultures and traditions of our collective Rainbow Nation.
Braai Day hopes to take that rich diversity and gather it around a fire to unite in the greatest and simplest form of hospitable acceptance, a shared meal. The spirit of South Africans was born alongside the fire while carefully watching the sometimes charcoaled meat, often assisted by certain liquid spirits. Despite the differences, few places reveal just how alike we all are than when encircling a fire arguing about the Springboks or the Proteas.
