Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes gives up chance of first-half Champions League hat-trick to hand Marcus Rashford penalty instead
Nov 25, 2020
“I don’t care if the goal is given to me or to Marcus [Rashford]. All I care about is winning and the victory. I am happy with the way I played today.”
Bruno Fernandes’ words last month after notching a brace and an assist in a 3-1 win at Everton.
As Rashford didn’t really touch his cross that turned out to be United’s winner the goal was awarded to him, but the Portuguese wasn’t fussed either way. The team was his overriding priority.
Fernandes’ underlined that level of professionalism on Tuesday night, as despite being on a first-half hat-trick against Istanbul Basaksehir he allowed the same teammate to take a penalty following a VAR check and put United three goals to the good.
Fernandes had already hit two strikes home, including a thunderbolt into the top corner, but his focus was all on the team rather than personal accolades.
The 26-year-old’s impact since arriving at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in January has been simply phenomenal.
Fernandes has been directly involved in 34 goals in 35 appearances for Manchester United (21 goals, 13 assists) since his big-money transfer to England.
He has also reached 20 goals for the Red Devils in fewer games (35) than any other midfielder in the club’s history.
Even at the full £67.7million – if all clauses are met – Fernandes is worth every single penny.
