Cops take to the sky to catch illegal partygoers
Oct 22, 2020
Keen Victorian footy fans are being warned by police to be on their best behaviour this weekend as officers take to the skies to catch anyone illegally celebrating.
Victoria Police will have helicopters and drones across Melbourne in operation on Saturday to catch anyone congregating in groups for the AFL Grand Final.
The air wing and Victoria Police’s drone unit will keep an eye on crowds at popular parks, beaches and other hot spots around Melbourne to ensure the footy-mad city celebrates in a COVID-safe way.
According to the Herald Sun , special “enforcement squads” will also saturate Richmond and Geelong – the two grand final teams’ regions – to ensure backyard and home parties remain in check.
“We will have a strong, dedicated and highly visible presence right from Geelong to Richmond, as well as other popular public locations including parks and gardens to ensure it is a safe day for everyone,” Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius said.
“Anyone found to be deliberately or blatantly breaching the restrictions can expect to receive a fine.”
And any Melburnian hoping to take their party to a local park or beach – due to the restrictions on visitors to people’s homes – are being warned to do it without alcohol.
City of Melbourne and City of Yarra Council have a ban on drinking alcohol in public and have promised to enforce that this weekend.
