Steampunk enthusiasts gathering at Hill-Stead in Farmington
Sep 29, 2020
People into steampunk can gather on Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hill-Stead Museum, 35 Mountain Road in Farmington, for a photo shoot, tours of the historic home and grounds, and a picnic.
The event is sponsored by Oddball Newt, the Manchester-based club co-founded by David Carlson of Manchester. It is part of 12 Months of Steampunk, a series of monthly events in and around Hartford that is spearheaded by Oddball Newt and Silk City Steampunk. Admission is free except for the indoor tours, which are $16.
“Steampunks, Goths, Whovians and Muggles are welcome to help put the ‘play’ in plague,” Carlson said.
Steampunk is an aesthetic that creates an alternate universe by blending Victorian-era fashions and imagery with whimsical anachronistic technologies evoking the era of steam power.
Carlson said he has been into steampunk since before he knew it was steampunk. “I liked that Victorian look. We did it for a family Christmas photo shoot. My son said, dad, that’s steampunk,” he said. “Then I started researching it and realized I was into it but I didn’t know the name for it.”
