Jul 5, 2020
- FG has been asked to probed alleged N300bn missing funds documented in 2017 report
- President Muhammadu Buhari was charged to carry out the investigation by SERAP
- According to the group, a probe into the missing funds will breathe new strength into the president's anti-corruption fight
President Muhammadu Buhari has been asked to launch an investigation into the N300 billion funds said to be stolen or mismanaged as documented in the 2017 audited report by the auditor-general of the federation.
The call was contained in a letter by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) on Saturday, July 4, and signed by its deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare.
The accountability group urged the president to mandate Abubakar Malami, the attorney-general of the federation and the anti-corruption agencies to commence probe into the mission funds.
SERAP, which described the development as a grave violation of public funds, further emphasised that the 2017 report "reveals grim allegations of mismanagement, diversion and stealing of public funds, as well as unaccounted-for spending."
"Investigating and prosecuting the alleged grand corruption documented by the AGF would improve the chances of success of your government’s oft-repeated commitment to fight corruption and end the impunity of perpetrators," SERAP said in the letter.
