Shades of Cristiano Ronaldo against Arsenal as Bruno Fernandes scores stunning breakaway goal in Manchester United’s thrashing of Brighton
Jun 30, 2020
We’re not sure what’s faster: Bruno Fernandes’ start to life at Manchester United, or their counter attack for his second goal in the 3-0 thrashing of Brighton.
The January signing grabbed his fourth and fifth goal in just eight Premier League games as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men continued to look mightily impressive since the restart.
Mason Greenwood’s opener was well taken – a couple of sharp stepovers before a quick finish – and Fernandes doubled their lead courtesy of a heavy deflection.
It was the third United goal which really caught the eye, and sparked memories of another man signed from Sporting Lisbon.
Remember Cristiano Ronaldo’s breakaway goal against Arsenal at the Emirates during the 2009 Champions League quarter-finals? Well, it was a bit like that.
Nemanja Matic released Greenwood with a stunning volley out wide, before the 18-year-old sprinted at the byline with electrifying pace.
With three United forwards eating up the turf to get in the box, Greenwood picked out an inch-perfect cross for Fernandes to smash it home on the volley.
The win means United remain undefeated since the restart and close to within two points of fourth-place Chelsea, who take on West Ham at the London Stadium on Wednesday night.
But more than the results, this was another sign that the Red Devils are once again a force to be reckoned with.
